How to Choose a Wire Harness Taping Machine
Choose harness taping equipment by harness geometry, tape material, overlap, branch handling, wrap length, tension control and production mix.

Harness taping is a geometry problem before it is a speed problem. A machine that wraps a straight bundle well may be unsuitable for short branches, large connectors or frequent diameter changes.
Classify the harness section

Separate the harness into processable sections instead of forcing one machine to follow every branch. The best production cell may combine automatic long-section wrapping with handheld finishing around breakouts.
Compare equipment architectures
The WM-467 automatic harness taping machine is intended for repeat bundles within its published diameter range. The WM-471 traction-assisted taping machine controls movement through a longer wrap section. The WM-4110 handheld taping machine preserves operator access around changing shapes and repair work.
Define the tape and acceptance method
Provide the actual tape roll and record:
- tape width, thickness, core and roll outside diameter;
- adhesive or non-adhesive construction;
- required overlap or pitch;
- acceptable start and finish positions;
- finished bundle diameter and flexibility;
- permitted wrinkles, gaps, lifted edges and jacket marking.
Verify the wrapped harness after handling, bending and any required environmental conditioning. A visually neat stationary sample may behave differently when installed.

Questions engineers ask
What decides whether harness taping can be automated?
Straight bundle length, diameter consistency, branch count, connector clearance, tape type and the ability to fixture the harness determine the practical automation level. Complex branches often retain a manual or handheld step.
What tape information should be supplied for a trial?
Provide tape material, width, thickness, core dimensions, adhesive condition, stretch behavior and the required overlap. Use the production tape because release and tension behavior vary between materials.
How should overlap be specified?
State the required overlap as a measurable percentage or pitch together with the accepted coverage and finished diameter. Do not rely only on a visual description such as tight or full wrap.
