A spiral cable winder is one station in a retractile-cord process. Winding straight cable around a mandrel creates the initial helix. Retaining that shape and recovering after extension depend on the cable construction and a qualified forming sequence. Verify mandrel, heating, cooling and recovery on the actual cable; a packing coil does not prove retractile performance.

First distinguish a retractile cord from a cable coiled for packing. A packing coil opens for use; a retractile cord must extend and return repeatedly. If the requirement is only packaging, use our cable coiling and binding selection guide.

Define three different lengths

“A three-metre spiral cable” is ambiguous. Record the straight cable length before forming, the relaxed coil-body length, and the required working extension separately. Show whether free tails and connectors are included in each dimension.

Also specify coil inside or outside diameter, cable OD, end direction, tail lengths and allowable recovery after extension. Northwire’s retractile-cord design guidance identifies retracted and extended length, tangent direction and coil diameter as distinct design inputs. A published extension ratio for one construction should not be applied to a different cable without testing.

Divide the equipment scope by operation

Reverse winding is used in some retractile-cord processes to develop spring action after heat treatment; MEGA Electronics describes this sequence in its coiled-cord manufacturing overview. The required operation and settings must still be qualified for your cable. “Stretching,” “pre-tensioning” and “reverse winding” should be defined by a demonstrated motion and measured result rather than treated as interchangeable names.

PVC hardness does not define a forming recipe

Shore hardness is one material property. It does not specify the heating time, forming temperature, cooling method or finished recovery force. The jacket compound, insulation underneath, shield construction, cable diameter and tooling all belong in the evaluation.

Ask for the cable material data and a recommended processing window, then agree trials with the full cable construction. Record the oven load and tooling arrangement with the temperature settings. Changing the number of loaded mandrels can change the thermal behavior, so a successful single-sample demonstration is not a full-load production result.

Inspect the cable after forming and after the agreed extension/recovery test. Define acceptable coil dimensions, jacket marking, adjacent-turn adhesion, tail distortion and electrical performance. The acceptance plan should state when recovery is measured, rather than relying on a photo taken immediately after release.

Size the cell from accepted shift output

Winding rpm cannot establish output from a process that also contains batch heating, cooling and manual handling. Compare each station in accepted pieces per shift and identify the slowest stage.

For illustration, a target of 600 accepted cords in 420 available production minutes requires an average of 42 seconds per accepted cord from the complete cell. This is planning arithmetic, not a machine performance claim. Scrap, changeovers and interruptions consume part of that allowance; batch stations also need enough tooling to keep winding supplied while other mandrels are heating or cooling.

What our winding machine covers

Our WM-4816 spiral cable winding machine lists cable OD 1–8 mm and adjustable turn count. Evaluate it for the winding stage. A complete thermal-forming, cooling and finishing system requires a separate application review and confirmed scope; spindle direction control does not establish a qualified reverse-forming process.

Send the cable datasheet, dimensioned finished-coil drawing, shift target and an approved cord sample. We can review the winding equipment and define which additional stages need trials before a complete production proposal is confirmed.

Questions engineers ask

Does a spiral cable winding machine make a finished retractile cord by itself?

A winding machine creates the helix on a mandrel. A finished retractile cord also depends on suitable cable construction, a qualified forming and cooling process, and any required reverse winding or conditioning. Quote and validate the complete sequence.

What temperature should be used to heat-set PVC spiral cable?

There is no universal setting based only on the name PVC or its Shore hardness. The compound, cable construction, geometry, oven loading and exposure time must be evaluated together. Establish the recipe from material information and trials, then inspect dimensions, recovery and electrical performance.

Does forward and reverse spindle rotation prove reverse-winding capability?

No. Reversing a winding spindle is not proof that the machine can reverse-form a heat-set coil or apply a controlled pre-tensioning cycle. Request a demonstration of that exact finishing operation and its finished dimensions.
