Printed Ribbon Cutting: Registration Marks and Cut Accuracy

Check printed ribbon cutting by finished length and print-to-cut offset. Trial mark contrast, glossy material, splices, missing marks and restarts.

For printed ribbon, specify both the finished piece length and the distance from a defined print feature to the cut. A cutter can produce equal lengths while gradually cutting through the artwork. Registration-mark control helps reference the printed repeat, but contrast, material movement and restart behavior must still be checked on the actual roll.

Put two dimensions on the drawing

Identify one repeatable reference: the leading edge of a registration mark, a clear boundary in the design, or another agreed feature. Dimension the cut from that feature using the same edge throughout inspection. Also specify the overall piece length and its limits.

Measure several print repeats on the incoming roll. If their spacing varies beyond the permitted piece-length variation, following every print mark and producing identical lengths may conflict. Resolve that requirement before buying equipment: the cutter cannot make an inconsistent printed repeat dimensionally uniform without changing where it cuts.

Photograph both sides of an accepted piece and show the direction of feed. State whether a visible registration mark is allowed on the finished item, removed by the cut, or hidden in a sewn area. This avoids demonstrating a technically stable cut that leaves an unwanted mark in the customer’s view.

Check the mark as an optical feature

A mark needs to be distinguishable from the surrounding material and other parts of the artwork under the actual sensor arrangement. Gloss, transparent areas, foil decoration, fabric texture and changes in ribbon height can affect what the sensor sees. Test the least favorable colorway rather than approving the entire range from one high-contrast sample.

SICK’s contrast-sensor instructions explain the general importance of mark/background contrast and stable sensing geometry. They are a technical reference for the detection principle, not a statement of the sensor fitted to our machine or its cutting tolerance.

Keep the ribbon guided without wrinkling or lateral wander at the detection point. Confirm that decorative elements between the intended marks do not produce extra triggers. If the artwork has no suitable feature, discuss a dedicated registration mark with the print provider before approving the cutting process.

Select the machine by the required reference

Our WM-580 ultrasonic ribbon cutter combines print-mark positioning, powered pre-feeding and receiving/stacking. Its ultrasonic head is listed at 18 kHz. It is a candidate when a compatible synthetic ribbon needs a sealed cut referenced to its print.

Ultrasonic frequency is not a positioning tolerance. Confirm ribbon dimensions, construction, edge result and print-to-cut limits through the trial. We check the actual material; a visually aligned cut does not establish a universal accuracy figure for every finish and pattern.

For plain material needing fixed lengths and collected stacks, compare the WM-579 cold/hot cutter with stacker. Its specified cutting width is 1–98 mm, but its fixed-length operation does not replace print-mark registration. If you need another edge method together with registration, use our custom-machine assessment to confirm the configuration.

Trial conditionWhat to observeAcceptance question
Normal repeated artworkCut-to-mark distance and piece lengthDo both meet the agreed drawing?
Glossy or low-contrast sectionMissed or extra detectionsIs the selected feature detected consistently?
Roll spliceFeed transition and the affected piecesHow are splice pieces identified and separated?
Missing or damaged markMachine response and recoveryIs the agreed stop or handling procedure demonstrated?
Stop and restartFirst pieces after restartingDoes the cut resume at the intended repeat?
Reel changeGuide position, tension and setupCan the operator reproduce the accepted setting?

These are trial requirements, not claims that every machine automatically rejects a splice or stops on every missing mark. Agree the response and verify it. Count accepted stacked pieces after removing setup and damaged-print pieces; a screen count alone does not prove usable output.

Prepare the sample and acceptance record

Send the production roll, color variants, nominal repeat, feed direction, cut drawing and edge requirement. Include a section with a real splice or a known print defect where available. Record length and print-to-cut measurements separately, along with settings and inspection conditions.

Use our webbing and tape cutting comparison for edge-process selection and sample-trial checklist for documenting the demonstration. Send your printed ribbon and cut position and we will show detection, cutting and collection on that material.

Questions engineers ask

Is accurate fixed-length feeding enough for printed ribbon?

Not always. If the actual print repeat differs from the programmed feed pitch, the artwork can move relative to the cut. Mark registration uses the detected repeat as a reference; finished length and print-to-cut position still need separate checks.

Can the cutter follow a logo instead of a separate registration mark?

Only after testing whether a repeatable feature can be detected reliably without false triggers from other artwork. Provide the actual roll and identify the exact feature and cut position. A dedicated mark may be more suitable for a particular design.

Does the WM-580 have a guaranteed print-to-cut tolerance for all ribbons?

No universal tolerance is established by the mark-positioning function alone. We confirm the accepted result on the actual print, material and operating conditions, with the required limits recorded on the quote.
