Crimp Pull Force and Press Tonnage Calculator

Check your pull-test reading against the minimum for your exact wire and contact, then convert any specified forming load or press nameplate rating to common force units.

Crimp pull-test check

Take the minimum and comparison rule from the controlling specification. Use the same sample preparation, grip arrangement and loading speed when taking the measurement.

Enter the specified minimum and your measurement.

The presets apply to the listed contacts and tool in the Molex specification, which calls for exceeding the tabulated minimum. Use the original units from your acceptance document, especially when a rounded conversion is close to the limit. The result checks the numerical requirement for one measurement. Molex ATS-640160042, revision A, page 1.

Crimping press force and tonnage conversion

Enter a force from the tooling specification, measured forming cycle or press nameplate. For machine selection, check the available forming force at the required working position, along with the applicator mount, stroke, shut height and feed direction.

Enter the known force and select its unit.

A metric tonne-force is 9.80665 kN. A US short ton-force is 2,000 lbf, about 8.89644 kN. One lbf is about 4.44822 N. NIST force conversion factors.

Which pull-test specification applies?

Start with the wire and terminal part numbers, the approved applicator, and your customer or component drawing. Check the exact revision and the test method before entering its force requirement.

  • IEC 60352-2 covers solderless crimped connections for electrical and electronic equipment within its conductor and contact scope. IEC 60352-2:2024.
  • ANSI/UL 486A-486B applies to wire connectors within the standard’s scope. UL Standards & Engagement.
  • SAE/USCAR-21 defines validation requirements for cable-to-terminal electrical crimps in automotive applications. SAE/USCAR-21 Revision 4.

For production, select press capacity from the tooling and forming requirements. For inspection, select the tester’s force range, grip and loading method from the acceptance procedure. Guide to crimp force monitoring and pull testing.
