Pneumatic Tube Cutting for Push-In Fittings: Ends, Length and Seating

Prepare pneumatic tubing for push-in fittings by checking square cuts, sealing surfaces, insertion depth and routing length. Specify an automatic-cutting trial.

Prepare pneumatic tube for a push-in fitting by controlling the cut face, outside sealing surface and installed length together. A tube can match the length setting yet enter the fitting poorly or load the connection after assembly. We verify the cut pieces with the actual tube-and-fitting combination before confirming a production setup.

Establish the approved tube-and-fitting pair

Record the tube material, outside diameter, wall thickness, identification and fitting series. “Pneumatic tubing” does not make polyurethane, nylon and other polymers interchangeable. Obtain the permitted tube specification and assembly instructions for the selected fitting, including operating conditions and any restrictions on reuse.

In its ZU-series fitting precautions, SMC requires right-angle cuts and undamaged tube exteriors. Apply those instructions within their stated scope.

Inspect incoming tube before altering the cutter. An oversized, oval, scored or otherwise unsuitable tube cannot be made compatible simply by setting the correct piece length. Keep tube lots identifiable so that a material change can be separated from a machine-setting change.

Calculate cut length from the installed route

The visible distance between fittings is not automatically the cut length. Account for the actual route, insertion into each connector and sufficient allowance for the specified bend radius and movement. Use the assembly drawing and fitting dimensions; do not add a universal insertion allowance.

Make the first assembly with the intended clips, supports and component positions. A piece that reaches two loose fittings on a bench may become too short when those fittings are fixed in the machine. Mark the agreed measurement references so that purchasing, cutting and assembly use the same definition.

Where soft tube recovers after feeding, define the measurement condition before adjusting the programmed length. Our soft-hose length-control guide explains that separate investigation.

Distinguish the defects before adjusting the machine

Do not compensate for a damaged tube end by increasing insertion force. Separate a cutting defect from an installation mistake; otherwise an adjustment may hide the cause while leaving the next batch vulnerable to the same failure.

Choose automation against the recurring job

Our WM-606 belt-feed tube cutter lists pneumatic tubing among its applications. The standard processing range is 4–30 mm; 30–50 mm is a custom configuration. Its specified output is 4,000 pcs/h at 100 mm cutting length and Ø10 mm tube diameter. These conditions belong with the rate whenever production capacity is compared.

The machine uses belt feeding and a servo-controlled blade holder and needs no compressed-air supply. We assess your material, wall, shortest piece and collection method in the trial. The length-setting range alone does not prove that a very short piece can be handled and inspected usefully.

For occasional small batches, compare a suitable manual cutter and stop with the complete automatic cycle. Include setup, material changes and inspection, not just blade motion. See our tube-cutting selection guide for other process arrangements.

Accept cut pieces and assembled connections

  1. Agree the tube specification, lengths, end criteria and sample plan before running.
  2. Keep samples from startup, steady running and relevant reel changes. Inspect length, both ends and the outside surface near each end.
  3. Assemble representative pieces into the actual fittings under the machine’s appropriate isolation procedure.
  4. Follow the fitting-specific seating check. Festo’s NPQM instructions distinguish initial seal contact from full insertion and call for a gentle retention check. These are NPQM instructions, not universal insertion dimensions.
  5. Complete the assembly’s prescribed leak and functional tests within its ratings, then retain samples and setup records.

A light retention check is not a substitute for the required leak test. When an existing connection is reworked, follow its reuse instructions and recheck the remaining route length after any damaged section is removed.

Send your tube sample, fitting details, route lengths and recurring batch quantity. We will show the cutting trial and define acceptance around the connection your operators actually assemble.

Questions engineers ask

Why can a correctly sized pneumatic tube leak after cutting?

Nominal diameter and length do not establish an acceptable connection. Check the approved tube-and-fitting combination, cut face, outside sealing surface, full insertion and routing loads using the fitting instructions.

Can WM-606 cut every pneumatic tube at 4,000 pieces per hour?

No. The listed rate is 4,000 pieces per hour at 100 mm cut length and Ø10 mm tube diameter. The standard processing range is 4–30 mm; 30–50 mm requires a custom configuration. We confirm the actual job by sample trial.
