Cutting 316 Stainless Wire Rope to 6 Inches with WM-9323
A U.S. customer sent 1/8-inch 316 stainless wire rope for a 152.4 mm cut trial. See the cut ends and the checks needed for ferrule fit and length.

A U.S. customer mailed us 3 metres of 316 stainless steel wire rope for a trial on our WM-9323. The job called for 6-inch (152.4 mm) lengths with flat, smooth ends and no burrs or frayed wires. Our trial produced clean-looking cut faces on the supplied rope. The customer wanted the end to slide into a ferrule with a 0.152-inch (3.8608 mm) inside diameter.
The supplied rope and the target part
The customer specified a nominal 1/8-inch diameter, 1×19 construction and left-hand lay. A cut that opens the lay or leaves even one projecting wire can catch on the ferrule. That is why we look at the cut end as well as the length.
Watch the trial and inspect the ends
We set the cut length to 152.4 mm for this trial. On our steel wire rope cutter WM-9323, a belt feed advances the rope through a guide and a pneumatic shear cuts it against a V-form die. The guide and die support the rope at the cut. The close-ups show compact ends on this sample, with no obvious long wires sticking out.
How many full pieces fit in 3 metres?
The customer’s estimate was about 19–20 pieces. At the requested 152.4 mm, 19 pieces use 2,895.6 mm and leave 104.4 mm before trimming and feed allowances. Twenty pieces need 3,048 mm before allowances. That gives a theoretical maximum of 19 full lengths from exactly 3 metres. For a trial or production order, budget extra material for the lead end and the tail the feeder needs to hold.
What to verify before ordering
- Ferrule fit. Try the actual ferrule on cut ends after they leave the die. Check that the wires stay together and the end enters without catching. The bore dimension above is the customer’s fit requirement.
- Finished length. Agree on the tolerance and measure consecutive pieces. The customer also asked about 30 inches (762 mm) and 36 inches (914.4 mm). Each length needs its own run and measurement record.
Request a cutting trial on your own rope. Send the rope grade, diameter, construction, lay, target length and tolerance, plus the actual ferrule or its drawing. We can check the cut and show you the finished ends before you order.
Questions engineers ask
How many 6-inch pieces can 3 metres of wire rope yield?
A 3,000 mm length allows at most 19 full pieces of 152.4 mm, with 104.4 mm left before trimming and feed allowances. Twenty full pieces require at least 3,048 mm before those allowances.
What matters for inserting a cut rope end into a ferrule?
Check the end face and side profile after release. Look for projecting wires, strand splay and flattening, then try the actual ferrule. This customer specified a 0.152-inch (3.8608 mm) inside diameter.
What accuracy can I expect at 30 and 36 inches?
Confirm repeatability separately at 30 inches (762 mm) and 36 inches (914.4 mm). Agree on a length tolerance and measure consecutive pieces at each setting with the intended feed and outfeed setup.
